Vitamin C Overdose Symptoms

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and it is often referred to as ascorbic acid.  It has been one of the most commonly used vitamins for decades, partially due to its wide range of health benefits, and partially because it has always been considered a safe vitamin with no adverse affects. However, doctors say the chances of vitamin C overdoses are possible, and that not all of the consequences are minor.

Minor Vitamin C Overdose Symptoms:

The symptoms that are caused by minor overdose of vitamin C are called as given as under:

  • Nausea: The irregularity of vitamins in the body increases nausea
  • Urine Problems: The urine becomes smelly with yellow color with overdose of the vitamins.
  • Mouth ulcers: Mouth ulcers happen often.
  • Upset stomach: Though, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, it can the acidity level in the body

Many times, diarrhea may happen if the level of vitamin C in the body increases.

Major symptoms of Vitamin C Overdose

The major symptoms are seen in the people who are taking vitamin C more than 6000mg in a day, or those who are taking vitamin C supplements on a daily basis.

  • Kidney Stones: If vitamin C level increases a lot, then a person can have kidney stones.
  • Vitamin B-12 Deficiencies: The excess of vitamin C affects vitamin B12 level in the body.
  • Copper deficiencies: Copper is a mineral that is affected a lot by the overdose of vitamin C in the body. The body needs copper and as they are killed by the excess elements of vitamin C, the body has copper deficiency.
  • Increased need for oxygen: Vitamin C increases the iron absorption in the body which in turn increases the level of RBC and hence the increased need for oxygen.

Long-term problems of Vitamin C Overdose

The overdose of vitamin C can lead to many chronic problems.

  • Kidney Diseases: If the overdose level is not checked in time, then many kidney problems can arise. The kidney has to work more as the level of the vitamin increases. Thus, renal problems can disturb the body functions.
  • Diabetes: This problem only happens in severe cases.
  • Hypoglycemia: The blood sugar level decreases in the body and the reason for this is increased level of vitamin C in the body.

Vitamin C is also present in many forms and can be easily digested by the body. As this is a water soluble vitamin, it must be taken every 6-8 hours. This vitamin helps a lot to maintain the body and to fight against infections. Vitamin C can be found in many forms such as supplements, or powdered form or it can be taken from citrus fruits easily. Some of the natural sources are oranges, lemons, tomatoes, berries and many other vegetables as well. This vitamin helps a lot in the consumption of iron by the red blood cells so the overdose leads to several serious medical issues as mentioned above.

The increased amount of iron in the body puts a pressure on the kidney, liver and also the actual ratio of blood cells get affected. The vitamin c overdose symptoms are the best way to detect that there is something wrong in the body. A person must consult a doctor as soon as possible.
