Vitamin Deficiency Symptoms

The entire range of vitamins is essential for proper growth of the person. Vitamins are essential for regulating proper metabolism in the body. The lack of vitamins in the body makes the person weak and prone to many diseases. Vitamin deficiency symptoms must not be over looked otherwise many chronic problems can happen. Vitamins help the body to perform various body functions by breaking the food items with the help of catalysts.

Vitamin Deficiency Symptoms:

The symptoms are different for each types of vitamin in the body. A brief description about the vitamin deficiency is given as follows:

  • Vitamin A

A deficient person can have dental problems along with slow formation of the bone. The eye problems like night blindness, xerophthalmia (dry eyes) may lead to blindness. The skin becomes dry and scaly; bumps can be also seen.  Susceptibility to cold, viral infections, sinusitis, infection in the urinary tract etc is also seen in some cases. Many patients can lose smell and taste stimuli. Loss of appetite and weight loss is also a common problem.

  • Vitamin B

Vitamin B has many subtypes, so the problem varies as per the types:

Thiamine or B1: The deficiency of this vitamin leads to symptoms like numbness, loss of sensation, tingling and acute pain in legs.

Riboflavin or B2: People with this deficiency can have the problem of vision, mouth ulcers and cracked lips.

Niacin or B3: B3 deficiency leads to weakness, diarrhea, tongue with burning sensation, mouth sores, weight loss and dry rough skin.

Pyridoxine or B6: Decreased levels of vitamin B6 make the persons more prone to dizziness, depression, nausea and mouth ulcers.

Cyanocobalamine or B12: The deficiency of this vitamin increases the feeling of numbness, tingling, and weakness. In severe cases, the breathlessness problem can occur.

  • Vitamin C

This vitamin is essential for proper collagen synthesis. The deficiency leads to scurvy, in which the collagen production stops, and this breaks the tendons and cartilage, opens the blood vessels, increases teeth fall and gums ulcerate. The immune system also deteriorates and the person is more prone to easy bruising, painful and swollen bone joints.. The healing process takes time. The hair and skin becomes dry. Anemia, lethargy, appetite loss, frequent infection and cold, weight gain atherosclerosis etc are some of the other symptoms.

  • Vitamin D

The deficiency of this vitamin affects the level of insulin in the body, thus gives rise to type 2 diabetes. Many bone related problems like rickets (problem of the soft bones), several skeletal deformities and retarded bone growth in children can be seen. In adults, osteomalacia happens; the bones become soft and muscular weakness increases, bone fracture possibility increases. In addition, osteoporosis is also one of the diseases. Even in older people, there is a high risk of contracting rheumatoid arthritis, blood pressure, low calcium level in blood (hypocalcaemia), numbness, muscular cramps, tingling in toes and fingers, improper heart.

  • Vitamin E

Severe deficiency of this vitamin is rare. The problems can lead to appetite loss, nausea and anemia. The immune system of the body weakens, eye diseases like cataracts and retina degeneration arises. Some heart related problems like acute chest pain also arises. Apart from this, many other health problems like muscular weakness, muscular cramps, stiffness and nerves injury, problems in hands, legs and feet. A person also faces lack of coordination in the muscular movements with jerk and instability. Many times, severe deficiency leads to urinary tract infections.

  • Vitamin K

The deficiency of this vitamin leads to easy bleeding problems and bruising, problems in the intestine or the stomach. Due to such problems, the blood can be present in the vomit or appear in the stool or urine. More time is required for the blood clotting process.  In addition, many problems can affect the bones in the body making them weak.

All the vitamins are important for proper growth of the human body. A healthy diet is the best way to cure and evade many diseases. The vitamin deficiency symptoms can be wiped easily by using respective vitamin supplement and injection as per the doctor’s prescription.
